Hail is a good reflector of energy and will return very high dBZ values. These values are estimates of the rainfall per hour, updated each volume scan, with rainfall accumulated over time. Depending on the type of weather occurring and the area of the U.S., forecasters use a set of rainrates which are associated to the dBZ values. The higher the dBZ, the stronger the rainrate. Typically, light rain is occurring when the dBZ value reaches 20. The scale of dBZ values is also related to the intensity of rainfall. The value of the dBZ depends upon the mode the radar is in at the time the image was created. Notice the color on each scale remains the same in both operational modes, only the values change. The other scale (near left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in precipitation mode (dBZ values from 5 to 75). One scale (far left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in clear air mode (dBZ values from -28 to +28).

Each reflectivity image you see includes one of two color scales. The dBZ values increase as the strength of the signal returned to the radar increases. So, a more convenient number for calculations and comparison, a decibel (or logarithmic) scale (dBZ), is used. Reflectivity (designated by the letter Z) covers a wide range of signals (from very weak to very strong). "Reflectivity" is the amount of transmitted power returned to the radar receiver. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed without permission. The colors are the different echo intensities (reflectivity) measured in dBZ (decibels of Z) during each elevation scan. manufacturing and parts distribution facility investment commitments to more than $30.5 billion since 2013.ĪP Writer Michelle Chapman contributed from New York.Ĭopyright 2023 The Associated Press. “We’re the ones that built the company, and we want to see ourselves moving it forward into the future.” “We’ve very clearly said the conversion from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles, it has to be a just transition,” Booth said. UAW Vice President Mike Booth, who will lead negotiations with GM in contract talks that are scheduled to begin July 17, said the key to negotiations will be to make sure all workers have jobs in the transition to EVs. “It's their hope, but I don't think it's going to come out quite like that,” said Lakies. He doesn't think the transition to electric vehicles will take place as fast as GM is expecting, because the infrastructure isn't ready yet to charge the vehicles. “They want to be here to get through 30 years,” he said. “We were building military vehicles at this plant at one time,” he said.Īssembly line worker Mike Lakies, who has been with GM for 29 years, is happy that the investment will let him stay at the plant until he retires, but he's concerned for those with lesser seniority.

He’s happy that the plant’s future is secure for at least seven to 10 years, and said it will adapt to changes as it always has done. “It does raise concerns because we do build big trucks,” said Ryan Buchalski, president of the United Auto Workers local at the plant.
